Weekly News

*Parents: Please remember to sign your student's planner each night. Your signature verifies that they have studied their spelling words, practiced math facts, and read for 20 minutes. This is an important part of 3rd grade and I appreciate you partnering with me on this. Also, Powerdrills are due EVERY THURSDAY and Study Island is due EVERY FRIDAY. 



December 10-14
Reading: We are continuing Unit 3 in Lead 21. We are studying the question “How does geography affect a community?” We are also working on the skills: monitor comprehension, sequencing, and homophones.  

Writer’s Workshop: This week we are continuing our Holiday Tradition story. The students will write about a tradition that they do each year around the holiday time. All parents are invited to hear the students read their stories at our Holiday Tradition Party, December 19th at 1pm.

Math: We are finishing up Unit 7 this week and moving on to Unit 8. We will be working on coordinates this week. We will learn how to plot them on graphs and locate objects using a coordinate system.  

Social Studies: Our tour of the Midwest Region is well underway. The students have been to several interesting cities including St. Louis. We will continue the tour this week. The States and Capitals test will be FRIDAY DECEMBER 14TH.

December 3-7
Reading: We are continuing Unit 3 in Lead 21. We are studying the question “How does geography affect a community?” We are also working on the skills: paraphrasing, ask & answer questions, and word endings.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we are starting our Holiday Tradition story. The students will write about a tradition that they do each year around the holiday time. All parents are invited to hear the students read their stories at our Holiday Tradition Party, December 19th at 1pm. (Invitation to follow).

Math: We are continuing Unit 7 this week. We will work on counting money and perimeter. The students will also work on making point graphs using data tables.

Social Studies: We have finished our tour of the Northeast Region and are headed home to the Midwest! The students will learn about the Great Plains and many exciting cities in the Midwest Region. The States and Capitals test will be FRIDAY DECEMBER 14TH.

Important Dates:   
Friday 12/7- Polka Dot Day and Field Trip to Kansas City Chamber Orchestra.
Friday 12/14- FLAT STANLEY PROJECT DUE

November 26-30

This is an important part of 3rd grade and I appreciate you partnering with me on this. Also, Powerdrills are due EVERY THURSDAY and Study Island is due EVERY FRIDAY.  
 
Reading: We are starting Unit 3 in Lead 21. We are studying the question “How does geography affect a community?” We are also working on the skills: ask & answer questions, multiple meaning words, and consonant patterns.

Math: We are still in Unit 7 and this week we are continuing to work on using patterns in data tables and graphs to solve problems. We will also work on multiplication problem solving strategies.

Social Studies: This week we will continue our tour of the northeast region. We will visit Boston, the Erie Canal, and Hershey Pennsylvania! The students will learn how an assembly line was created at the Hershey factory and even make one of their own.

Weekly News



November 12-16
Reading: This week we are taking our quarterly benchmark assessment. We are also working on grammar skills: types of sentences, singular & plural nouns, and common & proper nouns.  

Writer’s Workshop: We are working on our Turkey in Disguise stories. We are going to work through the writing process here in class. Please work with your student on disguising their turkey at home. Turkeys are due on Monday Nov. 19th.

Math: This week we will finish up Unit 6 with rounding and palindromes. We will begin Unit 7 with a lesson called the Lemonade Stand. The students will be making a point graph for the first time.  

Social Studies: We are headed to the Northeast Region this week! We will introduce the region and discuss the states and capitals. We will also begin touring the Northeast. States and Capitals test will be November 30th.

Important Dates:  
          Tuesday 11/13- Early Dismissal
          Friday 11/16- Dress Like a Teacher Day!

Weekly News



November 5-9
Reading: This week we are continuing to read Owl Moon during reading. We are learning about descriptive language, making predictions, and text structure. We will also learn about similes. We will NOT have a spelling test this Friday.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we are working on a paragraph about an animal we would like to learn more about. We are going to model descriptive writing.

Math: This week we will work on Addition with Base Ten and Subtraction with Base Ten. We will also work on the value of money under $50.

Social Studies: We are learning so much about Washington D.C.! Each student is researching an important landmark from the Lincoln Memorial to the National Zoo. We will also have a chance to vote tomorrow in the All School Presidential Election!  

Important Dates:  
          Tuesday & Wednesday- Book Fair in the Gym!
          Wednesday 11/7- Field Trip to Arrowhead Stadium 9am-Noon.

Weekly News

October 29-November 2
Reading: This week we are reading Owl Moon during reading. We are learning about descriptive language, making predictions, and text structure. We will also learn about similes. We will have a spelling test this Friday.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we are working on a paragraph about an animal we would like to learn more about. We are going to model descriptive writing.

Math: We will finish up our unit on Area this week with our Mystery Foot and then move on to Unit 6 which has a review of place value and area.

Social Studies: We are heading to Washington D.C. this week just in time before the election! The students will learn about the branches of government and the major monuments and memorials.  

Important Dates:
          Tuesday 10/30- Early Dismissal
          Wednesday 10/31- Halloween! The parade will begin at 2:30pm followed by the party. If you would like to come early to help your student with their costume that would be fine! 


Math Facts This Week: Work on multiplication twos, fives, and tens.

Weekly News


October 15-19
Reading: We are continuing a new unit in Lead 21 about science and how it helps us have fun! We are learning about force, energy and technology.  We are also working on summarizing, idioms, and cause & effect.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we will continue working through our Candy Bar Story. We will finish drafting and begin revising.  

Math: We will finish up our unit on place value this week and begin a new unit on measuring area. The students will learn how to count squares inside a shape to find the area.

Science: This week we will continue our unit on Force and Motion. The students will learn about simple machines, work, and rules of motion.

Important Dates:
          Friday 10/19- Flat Stanley Field Trip (8:45am-Noon).
                                  *Report Cards go home!
